Investigation of WESTCO D-1 and D-2 Mud Control Additives,

Abstract

The Western Company(WESTCO), Dallas, Texas, submitted a proposal for research on a concept for altering soil by use of certain chemicals to reduce or eliminate soil stickiness and thus improve mobility of ground vehicles by preventing buildup of mud on the vehicle wheels. Two chemical agents were supplied by WESTCO for the study. The materials, labeled D-1 and D-2, can be categorized chemically as cationic surface active agents or surfactants. Results of the test indicate that th overall concept of preventing mud buildup on vehicle tires or tracks using an agent such as WESTCO D-1 or an equivalent similar development is technically feasible. However, the value of such an ultimate development to ground mobility is subject to conjecture.
