A Brief Survey on Metal Fatigue.

Abstract

The nomenclature of conventional fatigue test and the stress-strain relationship during a cyclic loading are discussed. Prot's method, for a rapid determination of the fatigue limit and statistical approaches to analyze the fatigue data are discussed. The solution of the problems of crack propagation occupy a large portion of the current literature on fatigue research. Short discussions are presented on five different approaches including Griffith's theory and Cherepanov's continuum mechanical approach. Miner's linear cumulative damage theory and various modifications to it are discussed including the effect of a random load. Influence of various factors, such as mean stresses, stress concentration, etc are examined. Thermal fatigue and the corrosion fatigue are briefly introduced. (Author)
