Long-Period Seismological Research Program.

Abstract

The most significant finding of the data analysis pertinent to the earthquake-explosion discrimination problem is one based on results from the seismic detection and earth noise studies. Visual examination of high-gain seismograms from CTA, FBK, and the station at Ogdensburg, NJ (OGD), for approximately 1,000 events in the magnitude range from m sub b 3.3 to about 6.5 indicates that surface waves with periods as long as 30 to 40 seconds are observable after most events, in particular the smallest magnitude events studied (e.g. m sub b = 3.6 recorded at FBK at epicentral distances of 5 to 10 degrees).
