Image Recording System, Low Light (IRSLL), Phase A.

Abstract

A study was made of the requirements and approaches appropriate to an Image Recording System, Low Light (IRSLL). The IRSLL will be used to record the images produced by ground-based, long focal length, optical telescopes focused on missiles or other objects of interest at slant ranges of 100,000 to 700,000 feet. IRSLL will be an integral part of the Long Range Attitude and Event Instrumentation System (LORAE). To retain sufficient image size on the final recording medium, the anticipated telescopes will have focal lengths of 300 to 1,000 inches. Even with the envisioned telescope diameters of 18 to 40 inches, the light level at the telescope focal plane will be quite low. This low intensity and the fact that IRSLL frame rates will exceed 100 frames per second require some type of image intensification process within the IRSLL. (Author)
