Characteristics of Deep-Sea Anchor Cables in Strong Ocean Currents. Tables of Values.

Abstract

This report makes available as an entity the tabulated results of the calculations of mooring cable characteristics. The calculations have been performed on IBM high-speed digital computers and the tabulations printed out directly from magnetic tape recordings of the results. Basic information is contained in each table heading relative to the type of rope involved, its size, weight and ultimate strength. The current type in which the mooring-cable operates is also given together with the angles of inclination to the horizontal at the anchor and at the level of no-motion below the moving layer of surface water. The nominal total water depth in every case is 12,000 ft. Tabulations include information in regard to the configuration and tension of a mooring cable at various points along its length. The footings at the base of each table record the horizontal and vertical components of the tensions in the cable at the anchor and at the water surface along with the overall scope and stance of the cable.
