Project COLD RAIN.

Abstract

The report describes the techniques and results of an Air Weather Service operation aimed at augmenting rainfall in south-central Texas. The Air Force portion of the project, termed COLD RAIN, was conducted in June of l971 and formed part of a large Texas drought-relief program directed by the Bureau of Reclamation. The primary goal of the COLD RAIN operation was, by seeding super-cooled cumulus clouds with silver-iodide nucleating material, to increase rainfall (over what would have occurred naturally) in as wide a geographical area as possible. A secondary, but very important consideration was to gain as great an understanding as possible about cloud response to seeding in order to refine and improve present-day rain-augmentation techniques.
