The Undulating Boundary Layer under a Stagnation Flow,
Abstract
In certain types of curved flow boundary layers there appear to exist spanwise periodic secondary flows which produce periodic streamwise striations in erodable surfaces, and in the case of supersonic flow criss-cross striations appear in pliable surfaces. Some experiments with a water jet against a flat surface have indicated that such boundary layers may be essentially spanwise wavy boundary layers. The paper establishes the plausibility of such a boundary layer in the case of irrotational uniform flow against a flat plate segment. The wave length in the boundary layer is estimated and compared to available measured values.
