Lifting Surfaces in Polymer Solutions.

Abstract

A full-scale hydrofoil and strut combination was tested in the Naval Ship Research and Development Center Towing Tank at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia. Lift and drag forces were measured on the strut-foil combination with and without air ejection and polymer ejection. Lift and drag forces were also measured on the strut and the strut-foil combination in homogeneous polymer solutions in the tank. Test speeds were between 30 and 80 feet per second. The polymer used was poly-ethylene oxide WRS-301 at concentrations in the tank which ranged from 1 to 27 ppmw. (Author)
