Phenomenology of Synergistic Catalyzed Propellants.

Abstract

Effectiveness of synergistic catalyst systems in altering ballistic parameters of composite solid propellants was studied and synergism observed in oxidizer decomposition by differential thermal analysis techniques was demonstrated in real propellant. Results of Keenan's work under Contract Nonr-4008(07) that showed chlorides and various transition metal ions exhibit synergistic effect in catalysis of thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate were confirmed through differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis and were correlated with DSC results. Keenan's results indicating synergism were apparently partially the result of sample self-heating. (Author)
