Poly-(1,3-Phenylene hexafluorotrimethylene).

Abstract

Two routes involving fluoralkylcopper intermediates have been used to prepare poly-(1,3-phenylenehexafluorotrimethylene): by the reaction of 1-iodo-3-(m-iodophenyl)hexafluoropropane and an excess of copper, and by the reaction of stoichiometric amounts of 1,3-di-iodohexafluoropropane and 1,3-di-(m-iodophenyl)hexafluoropropane with an excess of copper, both reactions being done in polar aprotic solvents. The preparation of the intermediate iodo compounds are described. The polymer is a brittle resin which becomes elastomeric at 30-35C, and is quite thermally stable. Extensive weight loss does not occur below 450C in air or in nitrogen. (Author)
