Development of Materials Handling Concept for Naval Advanced Base Ports.

Abstract

The report describes and illustrates a material handling concept for naval advanced base ports. It includes basically plans, descriptions and back-up calculation for a concept capable of movement to an advanced base where it can be erected and used for off-loading containers from a supply ship to lighters or other craft. The concept consists of a container crane mounted on a barge which can be jacked out of the water at the advanced site to form a stable platform. A summary of the various propulsion methods are outlined in the text and attached plans. Speed and power requirements as well as estimated costs are presented for each propulsion case. Ship's motion and its effect on cargo handling rates is discussed. A prototype development program outlining the main factors affecting the development of the concept as well as an estimate of cost to accomplish this development is given. (Author)
