Evaluation and Analysis of Research on Bioceramics for Skeletal Repair and Replacement.

Abstract

The report constitutes a summary of the search and evaluation carried out in the field of bioceramics for skeletal prosthesis. For the most part, the report covers research programs that are, or have recently been, funded by agencies of the United States Government, and presents a composite picture of the on-going research in this field. It is found that while the number of programs under way is relatively small, the scope of total activities covers a number of different applications and follows similarly diverse directions. Some funded programs are directly applicable to the design and use of ceramic materials for either permanent or temporary skeletal repair; in others, greater emphasis is placed on the intrinsic properties of materials. In view of the somewhat limited amount of work immediately directed toward the subject program, additional information is contained that will address other materials systems and other applications. Recommendations for further research efforts are included. (Author)
