Display and Related System Requirements for IFR Steep Approach.

Abstract

The objective was to establish display information and subsystem requirements for manually controlled stepp-angle approach and landing under IFR flight conditions with vertical-lift aircraft. Investigations were conducted as a series of iterative analyses and the real-time man-in-the-loop simulations to evaluate selected display formats, themselves, as well as the effects which relevant system and environmental variables have upon piloting task performance. Alternative display formats were initially tested under idealized flight conditions. The testing of selected formats was then continued in a series of simulation studies in which system and environmental characteristics were systematically introduced to determine their individual and interactive effects upon piloting performance.
