The Size of Virions as a Genetic Marker of Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus,

Abstract

The population of the wild strain of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus consists of heterogenous virions, while the clones isolated from this population consist of virions relatively similar in size. The average virion diameters in different clones vary from 72.68 to 86.12 millimicrons. Virion sizes characteristic of a clone are retained in the progeny. The size of VEE virus virions may be regarded as a genetic marker since it characterizes individual purelines of the virus and is hereditary. It is known that such an exterior marker as size is an inherited property of organisms of different types. As this touches the viruses of animals, the given position could only be to postulate, since, in the genetic aspect, the sizes of virions have not been studied by anyone. In this paper experimental data are introduced showing that the size of virions of one of the viruses of Man and animals, namely VEE, is hereditarily determined. (Author)
