Some New Developments in the Foundations of Shell Theory.

Abstract

A comprehensive and consistent theory of thin shells has been presented. Approximate strain and curvature-change tensors as well as approximate equilibrium equations and boundary conditions for various magnitudes of the tilt and the in-plane rotation have been given. Constitutive equations for isotropic, elastic shells have been derived by considering the strain energy as a quadratic functional of the deformation measures. Finally a complete set of stability equations has been given along with a set of boundary conditions for conservative edge loading.
