Effect of Pretreatment Environment on Herbicidal Response and Morphological Variation of Three Species.
Abstract
Three species of plants were grown under three common regimes (greenhouse, growth chamber, and field conditions) and treated with sublethal applications of (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D) at different stages of growth. Pretreatment environment was found to affect growth habit and herbicide response in all species. Preliminary microscopic examinations indicate a possible relation between herbicide sensitivity and cuticle thickness as modified by environment. Investigators who cross compare plant responses from different growth habitats should take such effects into consideration. (Author)
