Evaluation of a Co-Axial Barrel Energy Transfer Concept.
Abstract
A study was made by the Research Directorage, Weapons Laboratory at Rock Island of a novel, hydromechanical, residue-free energy transferral method to extract energy from propellant gases for use as motivating power for weapon extraction and feed mechanisms. This study encompassed concurrent mutually supportive theoretical analysis and experimental programs to predict and measure, respectively, the amount of energy extracted. The optimum dimensions from the theoretical study were used as design parameters for the test vehicle. The effects of varying piston mass, barrel wall thickness, and liquid column thickness were determined in the analytical program. In the experimental program for glycerine, only the optimum values of the latter two parameters were considered. All three parameters were optimized for the mercury experimental program. In addition, provisions for varying the thickness of the liquid column were incorporated into the test vehicle. Mercury, glycerine, water, and SAE 30 oil were the fluids evaluated in the analytical program, whereas experimental testing was limited to the more promising of the fluids, mercury and glycerine.
