Assessment of the Importance of Filariasis in Thailand.

Abstract

The assessment of the importance of filariasis in Thailand was made in 4 provinces of the peninsula of South Thailand, i.e. Pattani, Narathivas, and Songkla on the eastern coast and Satul on the western coast. The methods of procedure were performed during February 1970 - July 1971 by blood examinations for microfilariae in the villagers, the examinations for elephantiasis and for cases with filariasis symptoms and signs, the infection rate of filariasis, the intensity and periodicity of microfilariae, the survey of animal hosts, the prevalence of the mosquitoes in general and the mosquito vectors in the areas. The findings indicate that Pattani and Narathivas are endemic areas of B.malayi with moderate degree of infection and rather active transmission. Songkla has a low grade of infection, while Satul is free from filariasis. The results from laboratory work indicated that the cats were experimentally susceptible to B.malayi the infection of which was active in the animals for several months. However, the characteristic of periodicity of the microfilariae of B.malayi in the cats were changed from nocturnally periodic form (in man) to be nocturnally or diurnally subperiodic forms.
