Design and Flight of Charged Particle Detection Systems for Rocket Experiments.

Abstract

Six auroral particle detection systems for use on rockets have been constructed, flown, and the data returned used to evaluate instrument performance. The systems consist of an electrostatic analyzer (ESA) for electrons of 1 to 10 (or 15) keV, an electron scintillator-photomultiplier combination for 10 to 200 keV electrons, and a solid state detector for 0.3 to 3 MeV protons. One payload used a CsI(Tl) crystalphotomultiplier in place of the solid state detector to measure 0.68 to 7.28 MeV rocket launches. The particle detection payload has proven to be quite reliable and, except for necessary modification of the ESA, should be useful for future rocket flights. (Author)
