Vibrational Population of the A triplet Sigma(u)(+) and B triplet Pi(g) States of N2 in Normal Auoras.

Abstract

New electron impact excitation cross sections for the six lowest triplet states (A, B, W, C, E, D) of N2 have been employed and the coupled equations of statistical equilibrium solved to obtain the virbrational population of each electronic state. The results show that cascade from high levels of A triplet Sigma(u)(+) state and from the W triplet Delta(u) state plays a significant role in populating the lower vibrational levels of the B-state and hence the character of its 'apparent' excitation cross section.
