Calculation of Levels of Relative Contribution of the Carbon-Dioxide Channel Radiance from TIROS VII in the Case of a Large-Scale Stratospheric Warming in January 1964.

Abstract

A case study of a winter stratospheric warming in the western hemisphere in January 1964 between 60 degrees and 40 degrees north latitudes was conducted. Utilizing TIROS VII radiance data and analyzed height fields, a stepwise regression equation was determined to specify lower stratospheric layer temperatures. These temperatures were used with standard atmospheric temperatures to construct a sounding for use in a radiance computer program. Finally, this computed radiance was compared to regression values to determine if prediction and study of stratospheric warmings are valid and useful. (Author)
