Antireflection Thin Films on Transparent Media

Abstract

The paper provides a basic knowledge and understanding of thin film technology as it applies to single and multilayer antireflection coatings. A brief history of the subject is given. Derivations of the standard reflectance formulae are outlined from Maxwell's equations to the special cases of integral multiples of quarter wave layers. Practical considerations such as availability of materials, problems in coating, and commercially available facilities are discussed. This paper is designed to serve as a guide to the proper specification of antireflection coatings.
