Orientation Cues and Patterns of Long-Distance Travel of Marine Turtles.

Abstract

One aim of the research was to use visual and electronic tracking in studying the travel behavior of migrating sea turtles, and to apply the data obtained in evaluating navigation theories. Difficulties with equipment limited the success of the radio-tracking experiments. The results obtained nevertheless prove the value of this line of experimentation and it is now being continued, with other support. Another approach to the same research aim was the use of tagging-and-recovery experiments to elucidate the ecological geography and reproductive periodicities of the animals, as background for comparative judgement of the various navigation hypotheses.
