Development of Improved Aircraft Seat Cushions and Parachute Support Spacers.

Abstract

The purpose of this program was to improve the efficiency and safety of air crews by development of seat cushions and parachute support spacers which would give superior comfort in long-duration seating yet minimize the incidence of spinal injury in ejections and crash landings. Exhaustive testing of existing cushions and spacers was followed by establishment of criteria for optimum construction. Investigation and development of new materials potentially capable of fulfilling these requirements was made. (Author)
