Observations of Free-Swimming Porpoises and Whale Schools and Studies of the Chemistry of Head Oil in Porpoises.

Abstract

The report covers the period of October 1, 1971 through December 31, 1971 and discusses the progress of studies of the Hawaiian spinner porpoise, Stenella cf. longirostris. During this period two field expeditions of ten days and five days, respectively, were made to Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii. Six aerial spotting flights were made over the various island groups to obtain confirmatory data as to school size, location and movement patterns. In addition six short, 24 to 36 hours, trips were made to check upon possible whelping and mating aggregations noted last year during this period.
