About a Discriminant Analysis as the Means of Forecasting Meteorological Fields,
Abstract
The conditions for applicability of discriminant analysis in prognostic work are determined. It is shown that the usual method for making an optimum forecast using discriminant analysis cannot serve as a basis for determining the comparative success of a combination of prognostic methods. Some possible methods for evaluating the success of forests made using discriminant analysis and a broader class of stochastic forecasts are investigated. The conditions for optimum breakdown of the actual field into some group of nonintersecting classes are formulated. (Author)
