Time Dependent Properties of Adhesives.

Abstract

The purpose of this program was to determine the effect of strain rate-related phenomena on the mechanical properties of typical structural adhesives. High sensitivity extensometers were used to measure the modulus, precision elastic limit, microyield stress and viscoelastic flow for metal/metal adhesive-bonded joints. Four epoxy adhesives, Metlbond 329, 328, 250 and 227, were tested in tensile and shear loading as a function of: temperature, strain rate, load cycling, prior strain and recovery time. It was found that the micromechanical properties are directly proportional to the strain rate and inversely proportional to the test temperature. Prior loading decreases the micromechanical properties; the extent of the damage depends upon the stress level and the number of cycles. Partial recovery of the damage was observed under diminished load. (Author, modified-PL)
