Research on Whisker-Reinforce Metal Composites.

Abstract

The thermal stability of Al2O3 whiskers in a 2.5% Si-Al alloy matrix was investigated by heating composite samples to 370C in air for exposure times up to 7500 hours. No significant deterioration in room temperature strength was observed after exposure. Processing of beta-SiC whiskers was improved to provide a cleaned and classified product. Use of hot pressing dies fitted with 1100 Al seals permitted the preparation of consistent composite and unreinforced matrix samples for investigating the susceptibility to stress corrosion of the 2024 Al/beta-SiC whisker composite system.
