An Examination of a General Association Formula for Simple Situations.

Abstract

The results of applying a formula for calculating the probability of association between an observation and a forecast target position are examined for simple situations in which there is a single measurement and a single forecast. It is shown that in general none of the formula parameters can safely be ignored. In particular it is shown that the orientation and shape of the position error distribution ellipses is of great importance in the calculation of the probability of association. (Author)
