An Experimental Investigation of the Roll Rate of a Finned Projectile at Mach Numbers 1.5 and at Angles of Attack up to 90 Deg.

Abstract

Free-spinning roll tests were conducted on a finned projectile model in the von Karman Facility (VKF) Supersonic Wind Tunnel (A). The tests were conducted at a Mach number of 1.50 and at a Reynolds number, based on model length, 2,200,000. Spin rate was obtained at angles of attack from 0 to 90 deg for fin cant angles of 0 and 2 deg. The zero cant angle fin configuration did not spin at any angle of attack. The spin rate for the 2-deg cant angle fin configuration decreased with angle of attack and had dual stable roll modes at some of the higher angles of attack. (Author)
