Mode-Locked Laser Communications System.

Abstract

The report is intended to provide a brief outline of various possible designs for a high bit rate laser communications system. The concern is solely on using a mode-locked laser and pulse code modulation. For each proposed system, the advantages and disadvantages as well as foreseeable barriers are indicated. This report grew out of a study and investigation of mode-locked lasers and techniques for incorporating them in a laser communications system. Recommendations on the most feasible system for fabrication are given. This is based on the near term-component state-of-the-art as well as the requirements of a tactical system. (Author)
