Container Handling Crane for Lykes Seabee Ship.

Abstract

The study covers the investigation of the feasibility only of putting a gantry crane on a Lykes Seabee ship for the purpose of unloading containers from a containership tied up alongside. The crane is to have an outreach of at least 50 ft from the side of the ship, but preferably 100 ft. The installation is a temporary one only, and will be removed from the ship after a test program of approximately one weeks duration. There is to be a minimum (preferably none) of disruption or modification to the ship's structure and systems. The crane must also be suitable for installation on a DeLong Type A pier. Tests of the crane on the DeLong pier are scheduled for September, 1972, and on the third Lykes Seabee for January, 1973. (Author)
