Some Orthotropic Shells of Revolution with Bending Suppressed.

Abstract

Design of composite material structures using optimum combination of a high strength material and a relatively low strength matrix to achieve an improved strength to weight ratio with cost as a criterion is discussed. Shell configurations are obtained for orthotropic toroidal type shells with axial load only and for orthotropic shells with axial load and internal pressure. An axisymmetric problem is considered with the axes of orthotropy coinciding with the meridional and circumferential directions. The effect of orthotropy on the Gaussian curvature of the shell is discussed. The relative importance of the axial load to the internal pressure ratio is also studied. (Author, modified-PL)
