Ionospheric Research Using Satellites.

Abstract

A new ray-tracing program for HF waves through the ionosphere is reported. First applications were made to the study of propagation of satellite signals perpendicularly to the earth's field. The change in the sense of polarization was also measured experimentally as the satellite moves through transverse propagation conditions. The pattern and gain of a 30 foot dish antenna was measured experimentally using navigation satellite transmissions on 400 MHz and compared to calculations based on the measurement of the illuminiation by the specially designed feed.
