152MM G/L XM150E6 Thermal Shroud.

Abstract

This report presents a feasibility study which includes the design, fabrication, and testing of three composite gun tube thermal shrouds consisting of high strength filaments (E-glass) embedded into a low thermally conductive matrix (Epoxy). This study ascertains the usefulness of a thermal shroud on the 152mm XM150E6 gun tube, if the tube were in the shade, and then suddenly exposed to a solar load of 250 to 300 BTU/hr/ sq ft. Reductions in gun tube bend, from a tube without a shroud to a tube with a shroud, go as high as 89% with proposal #3 (WTV-F21915), a design which includes Air Vents, and is constructed, solely, by the use of a filament winding technique.
