Acoustic Near-Field Measurements of a Free-Flooded Magnetostrictive Ring.

Abstract

Precision acoustic near-field pressure magnitude and phase measurements have been made of radially oscillating free-flooded cylindrical ring. The measurements demonstrate the potential of the NRL Acoustic Research Tank Facility for careful determination of near-field pressure magnitude and phase. Various pressure profiles and phase profiles were plotted. Besides demonstrating results possible with the Tank Facility the profiles were used in deriving dynamic properties of the ring. The transmitting efficiency, surface velocity, and radiation impedance of the ring were derived from the near-field data and were independently confirmed by other methods. Further analysis than that presented here can predict the acoustic interaction through the medium among many rings in an array. (Author)
