Rapid Seriation Methods with Applications.

Abstract

The paper considers new seriation techniques useful in handling the problem of temporally ordering archaeological materials. Part of this material has been taken from a previous paper (see Gelfand (1969)). In dealing with the above problem numerous seriation, scaling and cluster analysis methods have been discussed. The literature on seriation alone is extensive. In particular the author offers two rapid seriation methods for multivariate data vectors reduced to a similarity matrix through the choice of an appropriate similarity function. The techniques are presented in detail and are applied to several sets of archaeological data considered by earlier researchers. In addition the author considers several new related theorems as well as some more general discussion of the sequencing problem. (Author)
