Research on Zircon Polarizers.

Abstract

Experiments on the growth of zircon (ZrSiO4) were continued using the hydrothermal method. In 1.0-1.5 inch diameter autoclaves, a mixed mineralizer consisting of 5m KF- 1m LiF was used to produce high quality growth at 570C and 21,400 psi. A 7.5m KF- 2m LiF mineralizer produced the best growth rate of 0.002 inch per day per side on (100) seeds. Transparent growth on cm seeds has been produced for the first time. This gives strong evidence that inch size zircon crystals can be obtained hydrothermally. Small hydrothermal runs have been made to evaluate growth under various pressure-temperature-concentration conditions. Attempts to synthesize HfSiO4, a possible substitute for zircon, are described. Plans for a hydrothermal system with pressure-temperature capabilities of 30,000 psi and 700C were completed. The system is now under construction. (Author)
