Fusion Casting of B4C-SiC-Si Armor Materials.

Abstract

The objective of the program was to define and optimize raw materials, melting, forming and annealing parameters for fusion casting of a B4C-SiC-Si ceramic armor material. The optimization of these parameters is detailed in this report. Drain-casting or vacuum-casting were determined to have the greatest potential for production processes. Carbon black powder was found to be the best annealing medium. Ballistic testing showed this material to be comparable with other boron carbide composite systems in affording ballistic protection against small arms ammunition. (Author)
