Submillimeter Low Noise Detector and Amplifier.

Abstract

A 2 millimeter wavelength gas parametric amplifier using DCN15 as the active medium has been constructed and tested. Operating at room temperature, it has a measured noise figure of 25 dB. The difference between the measured value and the theoretical noise figure of 8 dB is attributed to the klystron oscillator that 'pumps' the medium. An analysis of the effect upon the amplifier's noise output of by slow but large random phase fluctuations of the pump field is presented, as well as circuits to cancel this effect. In preliminary tests 8 dB of cancellation has been achieved. (Author)
