Theory of Optical and Other Properties in Solid State Crystaline Systems.

Abstract

The final report reviews the activities of the solid state theory group of Professor Joseph L. Birman at New York University. Major activities included theory of light scattering, methods and applications of group theory, lattice dynamics theory, and some selected problems on excitons, polaritons, disordered systems, and luminescence. In the recent two years, major successes of the program have included a new explanation of the mechanism of Raman Scattering in II-VI type compounds, and also some major methodological advances in the application of group theory to problems in solid state physics.
