The Effectiveness of the See-and-Avoid Doctrine: Safe VERTICAL Clearance from Clouds.

Abstract

The collision hazards of allowing VFR aircraft to fly in the proximity of clouds are evaluated and compared with the number of near-misses or collisions expected on a clear day due to human failure to see and avoid other aircraft. Some numerical results are presented for representative air traffic. (Author)
