Abstract
The paper presents an experiment in application of the synoptic and climatologic method of L. A. Vitel towards the development of a method of long range forecast of the little studied element of ice behavior -- that of the simultaneity of freezing and breaking-up of rivers. The concurrent study of synoptic and hydrological factors made it possible to establish forecasting dependences and to use them for the forecasting of dates of ice cover formation on a large number of rivers and lakes on the territory of the Leningrad region and of the adjoining regions.
