Magmatism of Oceans in Connection with Their Tectonics,

Abstract

The paper examines problems of the relations of ocean-floor magmatism to the most important tectonic zones. The widespread distribution on the ocean floors of a really small outcrops of igneous bedrock is pointed out. The most important categories of volcanic apparatus - andesite stratovolcanoes, balsaltic shield volcanoes, and basaltic stratovolcanoes - predominate essentially in the gesynclines, platforms, and rift zones of the ocean. Differences in chemical composition of lavas reflect both the relation to tectonics and the depth and duration of activity of the magma reservoir. (Author)
