Subjective Scaling of Student Performance,
Abstract
Most current performance contracting programs in education focus on improving basic mathematics and reading skills. This raises the question of whether improvements in these skills are generalized to other subjects. Another central issue concerns the validity of the standardized tests contractors now use to evaluate performance in mathematics and reading. The paper presents techniques for psychological scaling of students' schoolwork. They enable measures of the generalization of basic math and reading improvement, and provide a criterion by which future standaridized tests might be validated. The techniques appear to have great potential for future research in education process, although more research is necessary to develop them within the educational context. (Author)
