The Role of Migration in California's Growth,

Abstract

The paper traces the development of California's population, with special emphasis on the migration component of its growth. The first section offers an overview, in relation to national patterns, of trends under way in the State and where they are leading. Section 2 examines in more detail the historical role of California's migration. Section 3 reviews several highlights of recent research, discussing the characteristics of migrants -- the rate at which they move and the selectivities that result -- and the origins and destinations of migration. Finally, there is speculation about the implications for state policy on population.
