The Deformation and Mass Loss of Liquid Drops in a High-Speed Flow of Gas,

Abstract

When a vehicle traveling at high speed enters a gas containing a suspension of liquid drops, these drops are accelerated by the gas being pushed ahead of the vehicle. Some of them may be light enough to be caught up in the streamlines of the gas flow, and pass around the vehicle. Others will be overtaken and impinge upon the surface of the vehicle. Such a process may be related directly to an aircraft entering a cloud or being subjected to rain erosion. In such cases, it is of interest to know the mass and velocity of the drop as it strikes the vehicle. The deformlation of a liquid drop placed suddenly into a uniform high-speed gas flow is analyzed. The drop deforms into a shap resembling a saucer, whose edges break off as they become progressively thinner. The mass loss is analyzed.
