Possible Settling of Perennially Frozen Loose Deposits in West Siberia during Thawing (Vozmoshnye Osadki pri Profaivanii Mnogelet Nemerzlykh Sibir),

Abstract

In the development of land with perennially frozen friable deposits of great depth, a serious danger is presented by the thermal settlings of buildings erected on high-ice soils. Therefore a knowledge of the amounts of possible settlings permits the builder to form a rough judgment concerning the suitability or unsuitability of soils as a foundation for construction and to recommend a building technique even during the initial stage of studies. Since during thawing, the settlings are determined by the extent of ice saturation of the frozen friable deposits, while iciness is linked largely with the lithological composition and method of freezing the soils, the values of possible settlings also depend on these factors. The report gives values of possible settlings during the thawing of the upper levels of frozen Quaternary deposits in Western Siberia. (Author)
