Effect of Cryogenic Processes on the Strength of Ground and the Stability of Embankments during Thawing,

Abstract

The freeze-thaw cycle of the roadbed along the Achinsk-Abalakova line caused a decrease in the soils' strength by 1.2-7 times. Maximum softening was recorded in the heaved soils; during their thawing, only the load from their own weight exerted an effect. The ground's softening led to an extensive occurrence of deformations in the raodbed during the spring in the form of the development and growth of ballast trenches and beds, coupled with driftings of slopes.
