Utility of Tsai's Method for Seismic Discrimination

Abstract

The objective of the program is to study how the surface wave spectral analysis technique can be most effectively exploited to discriminate between earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions. The observed surface wave spectra are often contaminated by modulations caused by interference due to multipath propagation. These spectral modulations are not related to the characteristics of the seismic source, which is the prime concern, and so, our first task is to find an effective means for removing the undesirable modulations of the spectra.
